We have created the BYKATE Design Virtual Academy to inspire and inform anyone with an interest in design, and to share great ideas and best practice along the way. You'll find some great top tips about the design process and some of our current favourite design events to help broaden your knowledge.
THE PURPOSE OF THE BRIEF
- To open communication channels between client and designer.
- A great opportunity for both to really focus on the task in hand.
- To set out clear objectives and define ways to measure the success of the project.
OUR TOP FIVE BRIEF TIPS
- Take your time. Don't rush it, give it the time it deserves. A day spent thinking is better.
- Be logical. The brief should tell a story: who you are, what you need and why.
- Focus. This helps you clarify what you really need, not what you think you need.
- Be clear and concise. Set out clear objectives and define ways to measure the success.
- Most importantly, HAVE FUN. The creative brief is the first step toward a brilliant creative idea.

DESIGN DICTIONARY
Like any industry, designers have their own language and can sometimes baffle clients with jargon. At BYKATE Design we like to make things as simple and easy as possible, so we have compiled our own dictionary to give you an easy guide to some commonly used design jargon:
ARTWORK – the electronic files that are supplied to a printer and client at the final stage of a design project.
BLEED – the extra area that designers must allow if they want their images or colours to run to the edge of the page or to ‘bleed’ off the page. Typically 3mm is allowed for the bleed area.
BRAND – a brand is what defines a company’s identity. It can be made up of their logo, images, people and culture. It’s created to build a relationship between the company and its customers so they will recognise and trust the brand, and will become a loyal customer.
BRIEF – instructions a client will give to a designer so that they can come up with the creative solution for their project. See Our Top Five Brief Tips above.
CMYK – Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black are the four primary printing inks that make up any full-colour printing job. Also known as the four-colour process.
DESIGN PROCESS – all designers will approach a project in a certain way, and apply their own design process. At BYKATE we follow the Learn, Create, Grow process which allows us to learn and really understand a client and their needs in order to create the right design to allow their business to grow.
RGB – Red, Green and Blue are the 3 colours that are used by monitors to display images.
TARGET AUDIENCE – The various people who are expected to view, and react to, a design solution.
